Sullivan: The Withdrawal of US Forces from Afghanistan Was Necessary

Bayan News – Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, emphasized that the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan was necessary to address greater challenges.

In an interview with the American magazine “Foreign Affairs,” he stated that the Moscow attack on Ukraine was a larger challenge that unfolded more quickly than anticipated.

According to the White House National Security Advisor, if the United States had remained engaged in the war in Afghanistan, Moscow, in cooperation with the Taliban, would have kept American focus in Afghanistan and hindered assistance to Ukraine.

Sullivan stressed that the United States will maintain its ability to address international terrorism remotely in Afghanistan but will not engage in another long-term war.

It should be noted that US forces, after twenty years and as a result of three years of negotiations between US and Taliban delegations in Doha, withdrew from Afghanistan on August 15, 2021.

The withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan was unexpected and faced international criticism due to the swift action taken by US authorities.
