Russia’s Warning to Armenia Regarding Deepening Relations with Europe
Bayan News – Concurrent with Armenia’s expanding close relations with European countries, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning about the deepening of these relations with Yerevan.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Friday (March 29), “The authors are attempting to maintain the prospect of a visa-free relationship with the European Union, which will lead to a significant emigration of young people and economically active population to Europe, negatively impacting Armenia’s economy and security.”
According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this trend has also been observed in non-member countries such as Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Eastern European Union member states, where a large number of their population is moving to more prosperous countries in search of low-income jobs.
Amidst the strain in relations between Russia and Armenia, the issue of the presence of a Russian military base in the country (Armenia) has also been raised.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that this military base and its border guards, apart from the Zvartnots Airport on the Armenia-Iran and Armenia-Turkey border, are the only guarantee of Armenia’s sovereignty.
This comes as Armenia recently requested that Russian border agents be withdrawn from this airport.
