US Representative at the United Nations: World’s Efforts to Improve the Situation of Women in Afghanistan Have Not Yielded Results

Bayan News – Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the permanent representative of the United States at the United Nations, described the global community’s efforts to improve the situation of women in Afghanistan as unsuccessful.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday (April 18), she added that the global efforts to persuade the Taliban to accept the basic rights of the people, especially women’s rights in Afghanistan, have not yielded results.

Greenfield told reporters, “I say it is very discouraging. We have not made much progress, and I am concerned that Afghan women will lose their hope.”

According to the US permanent representative at the United Nations, the progress made in the past 20 years in Afghanistan in the areas of human rights and women’s rights has been eroded under the Taliban’s dominance.

She stated with concern, “I worked on issues related to Afghan women in the 1990s when the Taliban first took control of Afghanistan, and we made some progress. Now we see that what is happening is truly undoing the progress.”

She reassured that the United States will continue its efforts for the full participation of women in the future of Afghanistan.
