The European Union is consulting on sanctioning Israel

Bayan News – After the deadly attack by the Israeli army on civilians in the Gaza Strip, the foreign ministers of the European Union have put the sanctioning of Israel on the agenda.

Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin said yesterday (May 27) that for the first time, the EU foreign ministers have discussed sanctioning Israel in case it fails to comply with international law.

The Irish Foreign Minister added: “There was a very clear consensus on the need to support international humanitarian legal institutions.”

This European official stressed: “However, there was a serious discussion about the interim orders of the International Court of Justice, with very clear views that Israel should comply with the interim orders to open the Rafah border crossing and stop its military operations in Rafah.”

Martin added: “International humanitarian law, respect for human rights, is the raison d’être of the European Union, and the current events really put this issue at the center of attention, especially given the attack last night in which a large number of innocent people were killed.”

It should be noted that in the Israeli army’s air strike on the military camp in Rafah, about 40 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed.

This Israeli military attack has drawn international condemnation.

However, the International Court of Justice in The Hague has also ordered Israel to stop any military operations in Rafah, an order that has been ignored by the country’s army.
