Miller: Freeing three American citizens from the Taliban is a priority for the US
Beyan News – Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the US State Department, says that freeing three American citizens from the Taliban and returning them is a priority for the Biden administration.
The US State Department spokesman told reporters on Thursday (August 8) that the United States’ efforts to free George Geldman, Ryan Korbet and Mahmoud Habib are ongoing.
Geldman and Ryan Korbet are on the official US list, but Mahmoud Habib, who is a dual US citizen, is not on this list.
The US State Department spokesman said in response to reporters that the fact that Habib’s name is not on this list does not mean that Washington is not doing anything to free him.
According to reports, Ryan Korbet and Mahmoud Habib were arrested by the Taliban government in Afghanistan in separate incidents two years ago in October.
The US Secretary of State met with Mr. Korbet’s family this week and assured them that the government would make efforts to free him.
Ryan Korbet had lived in Afghanistan for over a decade and worked for a non-profit organization. Two months ago, a UN special reporter on torture reported that he is in need of immediate medical care.
