India grants citizenship to 20 Afghan Sikh refugees

Bayan News – Indian media has reported that the government of this country has granted citizenship documents to 20 Afghan Sikh citizens.

The Hindu newspaper published on Monday (August 12) stated that these Afghan Sikh citizens had applied for visas about three months ago.

The report states that the citizenship of these individuals was granted under India’s amended citizenship law.

According to the newspaper report, some of these applicants had “returned” to India in 1997 and had been living on long-term visas during this time.

India passed a citizenship law in 2019 that facilitates the granting of citizenship to Hindus from countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

It is noteworthy that many Sikh citizens of Afghanistan left the country after the Taliban came to power.
