Support from 29 UN experts for the formation of a case against the Taliban in the Hague

Bayan News – A group of United Nations experts, coinciding with the third anniversary of the fall of the former Afghan government and the Taliban’s dominance, has issued a joint statement calling on the international community not to normalize relations with their government (the Taliban).

The statement from these UN experts was published on Wednesday (August 14), and Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur, is also among the experts.

The statement indicates that they support efforts to initiate a case against the Taliban in the International Court of Justice due to violations of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and other applicable documents.

According to them, over the past three years, the Taliban have exposed the people of Afghanistan, especially women and girls, to horrific attacks that undermine their rights and freedoms.

They specified in the statement that the Taliban have severely repressed civil society and the media, displaying a blatant disregard for the principles of justice, non-discrimination, equality, and the rule of law.

This statement comes at a time when the Taliban regard issues concerning women and the formation of an inclusive government as internal matters and have consistently requested the international community, particularly the UN, not to intervene in these matters.

Moreover, Taliban officials have stated over the past three years that they have accepted freedom of expression and freedom of the media within the framework of Islamic sharia.
