Widespread protests in Israel; families of the slain hostages blame Netanyahu

Bayan News – As public protests intensify in Israel, Bezalel Smotrich, the country’s finance minister, has called on the attorney general to submit an urgent request to the courts to prevent the general strike scheduled for Monday (September 2).

According to Al Arabiya, this strike is aimed at pressuring the government of Benjamin Netanyahu to bring back Israeli hostages who are still in the hands of Hamas in Gaza.

In his letter to the attorney general, Smotrich emphasized that this strike is illegal as it seeks to negatively impact important political decisions related to national security.

He also warned that a widespread strike leading to a national shutdown, including the cancellation of flights, could have serious economic consequences and cause significant damage to the country’s economy during wartime.

In this context, large manufacturing companies and entrepreneurs in the technology sector in Israel have supported the call from the head of the workers’ union (Histadrut) for a one-day strike on Monday.

These requests came after Israel discovered the bodies of six hostages in a tunnel in southern Gaza and announced that these individuals were likely killed shortly before Israeli forces arrived, prompting protests and calls for a strike in Israel.

Thousands of Israelis took to the streets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, demanding that Netanyahu make greater efforts to recover the remaining hostages from Gaza.

Additionally, Israel’s largest labor union has issued a call for a general strike on Monday.
