Former U.S. Official: The Taliban Are Not a Threat to Global Security or the U.S.

Bayan News – David Petraeus, the former Director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), stated that despite possessing U.S. military equipment, the Taliban do not pose a threat to global security or Washington.

In an interview with Al Arabiya, the former U.S. military official said, “Overall, I do not see the Taliban as a threat to the United States.”

When asked about the Taliban’s military parade held last month in Kabul, he added: “No, I don’t think so. I think it was a well-executed military parade.”

Petraeus, who also previously served as commander of ISAF forces in Afghanistan, remarked that the U.S. was not obligated to withdraw from Afghanistan. He further stated that Washington could have easily continued its operations in Afghanistan, and U.S. allies wanted the same.

At the same time, the former U.S. official pointed out that America’s withdrawal led to the collapse of the security forces of the former Afghan government.

Petraeus also expressed concerns regarding ISIS and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan, noting that the Taliban lack the capability to prevent cross-border attacks from ISIS and the TTP.
