UN Security Council Meeting: Taliban’s Law on Promotion of Virtue is Another Tragic Failure for Afghanistan
Bayan News – Representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France at the UN Security Council described the implementation of the Taliban’s Law on the Promotion of Virtue as another tragic failure for Afghanistan.
The UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan was held last night (September 18).
Thomas Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, stated that the international community, particularly Washington, considers human rights issues before recognizing the Taliban.
She added, “We believe that more actions are needed to hold them [the Taliban] accountable and force them to change.”
Greenfield noted that ensuring human rights in Afghanistan is one of the “major differences” between the U.S., Russia, and China.
She emphasized that the Taliban cannot continue living in a world where they marginalize women and exclude half of the population from participating in Afghanistan’s progress.
Similarly, Jess Jumbert Gray, the UK’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN, condemned the approval of the Taliban’s Law on the Promotion of Virtue, calling it another tragic failure for Afghanistan.
She urged the Taliban to repeal this “repugnant” law and respect the rights of all Afghan citizens.
The UK representative also supported the appointment of a UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, stating that the Taliban cannot gain international support without respecting human rights and addressing issues related to terrorism and drugs.
She called on the international community to continue humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, noting that since 2021, the UK has spent over $800 million on humanitarian assistance for the country.
