Taliban Official to Iranian Ambassador: We Are Determined to Repatriate Refugees

Bayan News – Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, the Taliban Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, expressed in a meeting with the Iranian ambassador in Kabul that the current Afghan government is determined to repatriate refugees back to the country.

On Tuesday, October 15, the Taliban’s Minister of Refugees met with Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the Iranian Ambassador and Special Representative of the Iranian President for Afghanistan, in Kabul. They discussed the situation of Afghan refugees in Iran, as well as issues related to employment, resettlement, and education.

The Taliban minister expressed gratitude to the Islamic Republic of Iran for hosting Afghan refugees over the past 40 years and added, “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has also decided to repatriate the refugees, but a joint mechanism must be established to ensure that this process is carried out with dignity.”

Additionally, in the statement from the Taliban Ministry of Refugees, the Iranian ambassador reaffirmed that the Islamic Republic stands by the people of Afghanistan under all circumstances.

Referring to reports of mistreatment of Afghan refugees in Iran, the Iranian diplomat called such reports false and emphasized that Tehran upholds all the rights of the refugees.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees also mentioned that during the meeting with the Iranian ambassador, it was agreed that a delegation would visit Iran to assess the refugees’ problems and discuss solutions with Iranian officials.

This comes as the number of Afghan refugees in Iran has increased since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, along with a rise in deportations and mistreatment of refugees in Iran.
