Qomi: Iran Aims to Provide Afghanistan Access to Open Waters Through the Development of Chabahar Port
Bayan News – Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the ambassador and special representative of the Iranian president, stated during a meeting with the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs that Tehran is working to activate and expand the Chabahar Port, enabling Afghanistan to access open waters.
On Tuesday (November 19), the Iranian ambassador met with Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs, to discuss the transfer of Afghan prisoners, the expansion of relations, and cooperation in political, economic, and cultural areas.
Qomi emphasized during the meeting, “Iran is striving to activate and develop the Chabahar Port so that Afghanistan can gain access to open waters.” He further noted that Iran is prepared to complete unfinished projects in Afghanistan and intends to implement development and scientific initiatives in Afghan universities.
In response, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir remarked, “The Islamic Emirate (Taliban) seeks friendly relations with all countries and will not allow Afghan soil to be used to harm others.”
The senior Taliban official described the recent visit of Iran’s Ministry of Justice delegation to Afghanistan as beneficial and effective, reaffirming the current administration’s commitment to cooperation with Iran.
The Deputy Prime Minister concluded by expressing gratitude for the agreement regarding the transfer of 1,000 Afghan prisoners back to Afghanistan and called for the continuation of this process.
This comes as Iran has not yet officially recognized the Taliban government but has significantly strengthened its political and economic ties with Afghanistan.
Iran was among the first neighboring countries in the region to hand over its diplomatic missions to the Taliban.
