The Syrian War and Its Message for Afghanistan
By Sayed Mahdi Hussaini
Bayan News – The war and instability in Syria, and the broader crisis in the Middle East, carry several important messages for Afghanistan. One key lesson is that to ensure a life of peace and complete security, the government must engage with its people. It is essential to assess and address the basic needs of the population, including improving the economic situation.
When people’s basic needs are met, and they are involved in all aspects of society, no one will fall prey to any group or movement. When the system has the support of the people, no conspiracy can succeed.
The main reason that people in the region, particularly in Islamic countries, experience early political collapse is that rulers often want everything for themselves and their families. This leads to organizations recruiting among the hungry population, using them to implement their own agendas.
Afghanistan has not yet emerged from its crisis. The republic system in Afghanistan existed until just three years ago, but it collapsed soon after its establishment. The main reason for its collapse was the alienation of the people. Every institution was tainted by corruption, and each part of the republic belonged to a specific tribe, faction, or leader, which is why it was referred to as a “shareholder system,” and this term was not incorrect.
The fundamental issue is that we have always been part of the region’s crises, rather than learning from them. In Afghanistan’s history, there has been no significant effort to involve the people in building peace and strengthening economic foundations, except for the times of Amanullah Khan and Daoud Khan, who sought to model Afghanistan’s prosperity after successful global systems.
It is clear to everyone that it has been repeatedly stated that no people will bend under a policy of repression, and no law will be effective on a hungry population. This policy has not worked in Afghanistan, nor has it been successful in neighboring countries.
China and Russia, the two regional giants, continue with policies of repression, and their governments are guaranteed to survive. However, their regimes are not shaken by protests because they do not have hungry people who can be manipulated by any movement or sect.
Thus, Afghanistan today demands more attention to be directed towards its people. A thorough evaluation of the country’s recent past and the identification of fundamental solutions is crucial. The most obvious principle is improving the economic situation. Currently, the people of Afghanistan are suffering from poverty and hunger, and for any government, it should not be difficult to devise a program to address this problem.
When the economy of families and the people of Afghanistan improves, and the system serves the people, no Afghan will want to migrate, and no Afghan will fall prey to rival organizations. This will lay the foundation for a stable and prosperous country.
