Syrian War; Rebels Opposed to Bashar al-Assad Enter the City of Hama

Bayan News – International media have reported that rebels opposing Bashar al-Assad’s government entered the city of Hama on Thursday, December 5.

According to Reuters, the Syrian army stated that it had withdrawn from the city to protect civilian lives and avoid urban conflict, allowing the rebels to enter Hama.

The report indicated that the rebels seized areas in the northeastern part of Hama and freed their prisoners from the city’s central prison.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera released footage showing rebels inside Hama, some interacting with civilians and others patrolling the city on military vehicles and motorcycles.

It is worth noting that the rebels, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, captured the city of Aleppo in northern Syria last week. Since then, they have advanced southward from their besieged territory in northwestern Syria, reaching a strategic hill in northern Hama on Tuesday.

The fall of Hama to the rebels is considered a significant blow to Damascus and its allies, Russia and Iran.

According to Reuters, capturing Hama paves the way for the rebels to advance toward Homs, a central city that serves as a crossroads, connecting the most densely populated regions of Syria.
