Trump Threatens: Buy More Oil and Gas from the U.S. or Face Tariffs
Bayan News – Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, has threatened the European Union with tariffs if it does not increase its purchases of oil and gas from the United States.
On Friday (December 20), Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social: “I told the European Union that they must offset their massive trade deficit with the United States by purchasing our oil and gas on a large scale. Otherwise, the only option will be to impose tariffs.”
The president-elect emphasized that tariffs would be placed on most goods imported from Europe and stated that the EU would pay a high price for its trade deficit with the U.S. over several decades.
However, according to reports, the European Union increased its imports of oil and gas from the United States after deciding in 2022 to reduce its reliance on Russian oil and gas due to the war in Ukraine and halting purchases from that country.
According to a Reuters report, U.S. crude oil exports to Europe exceed two million barrels per day, with the Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden being the largest importers.
