Bayan News – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has stated on the occasion of World Earth Day that only 20% of the total population of Afghanistan has access to drinking water.
The organization stated in a statement on Monday, April 22, that the severe crisis of drinking water scarcity in Afghanistan is alarming.
According to the organization, 79% of the Afghan population does not have access to drinking water.
According to a report published by the organization in November 2023, Afghanistan ranked sixth among vulnerable countries to climate change.
The United Nations agency continues to state that climate change has harmed Afghan farmers and has added to the challenges of conflict, poverty, and migration in Afghanistan.
The United Nations has previously announced that a budget of at least $500 million is needed to address the water crisis in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, added that climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity severely threaten the Earth.
Guterres, in his message published on the X platform, called for the protection of the Earth against climate change and its resulting events.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations stated, “On Earth Day, we must support our planet, a planet threatened by climate change, pollution, and the loss of biodiversity. So let us unite.”
