UN experts call for the release of prominent education advocate from prison
Bayan News – United Nations experts have issued a joint statement urging the Taliban to immediately release Fahim Azimi, a defender of the right to education.
Richard Bent, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, Farida Banda, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to education, and five other experts have signed the statement.
The statement, released on Monday, April 22, states that Ahmad Fahim Azimi has been detained by the Taliban for the past six months, and his detention has no justification.
Azimi and his colleague Sadiqullah Afghan were reportedly arrested by Taliban intelligence from the Kart-e-Char neighborhood in Kabul last year and transferred to Pul-e-Charkhi prison.
It is said that he was arrested due to his support for girls’ education.
