Representatives of countries at the United Nations have called for a change in the Taliban’s policies towards women
Bayan News – The meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council was held on Tuesday in Geneva, where the human rights situation in Afghanistan over the past five years was discussed.
In this meeting, representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and other countries criticized the Taliban’s policies and expressed deep concern over the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.
The U.S. representative at the United Nations Human Rights Council urged the Taliban to cancel all discriminatory provisions and orders against women and allow for women’s education and employment.
The French representative, in their speech, emphasized that the Taliban have forced people to obey them. They also called for the cancellation of orders prohibiting women’s employment in relief organizations and the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and minorities.
Likewise, the representative from the United Kingdom described the restrictions imposed by the Taliban against women as concerning and stated, “The human rights situation in Afghanistan is much worse than it was five years ago.” They referred to the killing of former military personnel, arbitrary detention of journalists, public executions, and attacks against minorities by the Taliban, and demanded the cancellation of these “horrible restrictions against women.”
The representative from the United Kingdom also demanded the release of journalists and civilian activists who have been detained by the Taliban in recent months.
The representative from Germany described the treatment of women by the Taliban as “systematic gender harassment and discrimination” and deemed it a crime against humanity.
