Reactions to Iran’s Violence Against Migrants; Faiq: The Behavior and Actions of the Iranian Police Are Traceable

Bayan News – Nasir Ahmad Faiq, the Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, condemned the violent behavior of the Iranian police with Afghan migrants and described it as a violation of immigration laws.

Faiq wrote on the X platform that the behavior of the Iranian police with Afghan migrants is considered contrary to the accepted international principles and standards.

The Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations stressed that the violence of the Iranian police against migrants is condemnable and traceable based on international laws.

Faiq wrote: “The behavior and actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s police with Afghan refugees and migrants in general, and especially with those who have legal documents, are contrary to the accepted international principles and standards, and immigration laws.”

He further wrote: “This inhumane and un-Islamic act of the Iranian police is highly condemnable and traceable.”

He also called on the officials of the Islamic Republic to deal with the perpetrators of this incident separately to prevent the occurrence of such violent behavior against migrants.

On the other hand, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, the former Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, in a statement published on the X platform on Thursday (August 18), called on Iran to hold the perpetrators of mistreatment of Afghan migrants accountable.

Atmar wrote: “The people of Afghanistan are grateful to the Iranian government for sheltering millions of Afghans, but these days alarming reports of mistreatment of Afghan migrants by the Islamic Republic are heard.”

He added, “We expect the new Iranian government to review the situation and take appropriate measures to protect Afghan migrants.”

Meanwhile, Ata Mohammad Noor, the former governor of Balkh, also reacted to the violent behavior of the Iranian police towards Afghan migrants, calling it shocking.

Mr. Noor stressed that the Islamic Republic’s treatment of Afghan migrants is contrary to the spirit and right of neighborliness, and is in contrast with the provisions of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

The former government official further added that the Iranian government, given the critical situation in Afghanistan and the historical and civilizational commonalities between the two countries, should exercise restraint towards the Afghan migrants instead of tightening their living space.

However, the release of a video recording of the violent behavior of Iranian police officers towards Afghan migrants on social media has sparked a reaction.

The Islamic Republic of Iran authorities have not yet responded to this misconduct of their officers towards Afghan migrants.
