UN Special Rapporteur Barred from Entering Kabul

Bayan News – In a new move, the Taliban government has barred the entry of Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights, to Kabul.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, said in an interview with Deutsche Welle: “Bennett’s coming to Afghanistan has been prohibited, as he was tasked with propaganda against Afghanistan and there is no one we trust to believe his statements.”

Mujahid claimed that Bennett magnifies minor issues and also provides misinformation to other organizations.

The United Nations has not yet reacted to this development.

However, in April 2022, the United Nations Human Rights Council appointed Bennett as the Special Rapporteur to monitor the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

Over the past two years, Bennett has been deeply concerned about the human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls, and has submitted several reports and documents on this situation to the United Nations.
