New Taliban Law; Belgian Foreign Minister and Angelina Jolie Respond
Bayan News – Hadja Lahbib, the Belgian Foreign Minister, in response to the Taliban’s promulgation of the “Virtue and Vice” law, has said that the Taliban’s goal with this law is to suppress and exclude women from society.
The Belgian Foreign Minister and Hollywood star Angelina Jolie on Saturday (August 24) reacted on their social media platforms, writing to the international community that the status of women in Afghanistan must be strengthened.
The Belgian Foreign Minister emphasized that her country will continue to support civil society and those defending their rights.
Ms. Lahbib also wrote that the Taliban’s rise to power has pushed Afghanistan into a major retrograde, and at present, the Taliban is disregarding the issue of women’s human rights.
On the other hand, Angelina Jolie, the prominent Hollywood actress and filmmaker, has described the Taliban as repressive in response to the ratification of this law.
In her Instagram post, Ms. Jolie wrote: “A system that criminalizes the gaze, voice and power of women is cowardly and repressive.”
This renowned actress has previously criticized the Taliban’s restrictions on Afghan women and girls on several occasions.
These reactions come as the Taliban’s interim government considers the human rights and women’s issues as internal affairs of Afghanistan, and has consistently called on other countries not to interfere in these matters.
Simultaneously with these criticisms, Taliban officials have declared that the basic rights of all Afghan people, especially women, have been ensured within the framework of Islamic Sharia.
