Migration: Over 70,000 People Have Left Afghanistan in One Week
Bayan News – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that from August 18 to August 24 of this year, 72,624 people have left Afghanistan for Iran and Pakistan. This organization indicated in a report published on Monday (September 2) that more than 38,000 individuals have traveled to Iran and over 34,000 to Pakistan.
According to the IOM’s report, 80% of these individuals crossed through four main border points, while the remaining percentage crossed through other border points in Afghanistan. The report states that this figure shows a 21% increase in the number of people leaving Afghanistan compared to the previous week.
The organization indicates that Afghan citizens migrate to Iran and Pakistan mainly due to fundamental economic issues, transit, and often to reunite with family and for tourism.
The International Organization for Migration also noted that during this period, 64,950 people entered Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan; 38,904 from Iran and 26,046 from Pakistan. This organization adds that 93% of these individuals entered Afghanistan through the four main border crossings, while others accessed it through seven additional border points.
The IOM states that it obtained these figures by monitoring the movement at the borders of Afghanistan with Iran and Pakistan. Previously, this organization had reported that in the second quarter of this year, 532,854 people left Afghanistan for Iran and Pakistan, while 858,170 people entered Afghanistan from these two countries.
