Recent deadly ISIS attack in Kabul; Commonwealth of Independent States expresses concern over ISIS threat
Bayan News – Evgeny Sisev, head of the Counter-Terrorism Center of the Commonwealth of Independent States, expressed concern over the threat posed by the Khorasan branch of ISIS at a meeting in Uzbekistan.
These concerns were raised at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and CIS meeting regarding the fight against terrorism and extremism.
The meeting took place on Wednesday (September 4) hosted by Uzbekistan.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting occurs just two days after an ISIS suicide bomber targeted Taliban prosecutors on the Darulaman road in Kabul.
The head of the Counter-Terrorism Center of the CIS warned at this meeting about the increasing threats from ISIS Khorasan and expressed his concerns.
Evgeny Sisev stated that strengthening cooperation between CIS countries and international organizations to combat ISIS is on the agenda of the Tashkent meeting.
According to him, although the Taliban are making efforts to combat terrorist groups in Afghanistan and the situation in the country is improving, the threats from ISIS still remain.
He explained: “Currently, the threats from ISIS Khorasan aimed at radicalizing society, fostering hatred towards governmental structures, and inciting enmity between ethnic groups are at their peak.”
However, after the rise of the Taliban government, many countries in the region have expressed concern over the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.
These concerns, however, have continually been rejected by Taliban officials, who state that ISIS does not have a physical presence in the country and that regional countries need not worry.
