UN Women: Women Seek the Right to Decide
Bayan News – UN Women states that the Taliban has targeted the collective lives of women and girls in Afghanistan with the issuance of at least 70 decrees.
This UN agency reported on Thursday (September 5) that Afghan women want to work alongside men in Afghanistan.
Alison Davidian, the Special Representative of UN Women, stated in the report: “Women want the right to decide, not only in their homes but also in government and other areas. They want education and their rights.”
This UN official noted that despite the restrictions imposed by the Taliban, the organization is working in collaboration with several women and using two media outlets, radio and television, to help women and girls achieve their rights.
The Special Representative of UN Women in Afghanistan emphasized: “This work is an example of the resilience and adaptability of Afghan women.”
The report quotes Lina, a 26-year-old female journalist, who mentioned that she has left her journalism career following the Taliban’s return to power.
The organization also pointed out that the decrees issued by the Taliban against women have deprived approximately 1.1 million school-age girls of their right to education.
According to the report, while some women are still working, their job options are limited to those approved by the Taliban.
Lina stressed: “These prohibitions reduce women’s self-confidence and self-esteem, pushing them into corners of their homes. I know what situation they [the women] are in. Therefore, it is very important for me to raise their voices.”
However, the Taliban has consistently dismissed the concerns of international organizations regarding women in Afghanistan, asserting that, according to Sharia, the rights of women and all people in Afghanistan are guaranteed.
