International Literacy Day; UNAMA: Literacy is a fundamental human right
Bayan News – The Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has stated on the occasion of International Literacy Day that learning is a fundamental right of every human being.
Today, Sunday, September 8, coincides with International Literacy Day.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated September 8 as International Literacy Day in 1966.
On this occasion, UNAMA stated in a message published on its Facebook page: “Today and every day, we reaffirm that literacy is a fundamental human right.”
According to UNAMA, promoting education in multiple languages fosters mutual understanding, social mobilization, and peace, thereby empowering individuals to advocate for their rights.
International Literacy Day arrives at a time when over one million girls are deprived of attending school.
