The Joint UK-Canada Freedom Award Given to Independent Afghan Media
Bayan News – The annual Joint Freedom Award of the UK and Canada was awarded to Afghan media during a ceremony held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The award was presented on Friday (September 27) by the UK Foreign Secretary and Lord Collins of Highbury, Deputy Leader of the UK House of Lords, to Lotfullah Najafizada, CEO of Amu TV Network.
Senior officials from other countries and distinguished figures, including Jan Lipavský, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arnoldo André, Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nobel laureate Maria Ressa, and Jodie Ginsberg, President of the Committee to Protect Journalists, were in attendance.
It is worth noting that the annual Media Freedom Award has been given since 2020 to those who defend freedom of expression and democracy. Last year, the award was given to the Egyptian online newspaper “Mada Masr.”
This is the first time that the Joint UK-Canada Freedom Award has been presented to independent Afghan media.
