Richard Bennett: The International Community Lacks a Clear Plan for Afghanistan
Bayan News – Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan, states that the international community lacks a clear policy and defined plan for Afghanistan.
Bennett made these remarks in an interview with the United Nations news service, adding that the international community hastily left Afghanistan but should not forget the country.
He expressed that in the current situation, the “Independent Assessment of Afghanistan” conducted by Feridun Sinirlioğlu could serve as a highly suitable starting point for Afghanistan.
The UN Special Rapporteur emphasized that this assessment is not a lengthy or detailed document but rather a platform with a vision for Afghanistan’s future—one where Afghanistan lives in peace with itself and its neighbors and reintegrates into the international community.
However, this vision depends on significant, verifiable improvements in human rights, especially concerning the rights of women and girls.
It is noteworthy that Feridun Sinirlioğlu prepared the “Independent Assessment of Afghanistan” report in May of the previous year and presented it to the United Nations Security Council.
Based on this report, the Security Council requested the appointment of a special representative for Afghanistan.
Yet, more than a year later, the United Nations has still not appointed such a representative for Afghan affairs.
