A 17-Year-Old Afghan Girl Wins the International Children’s Peace Prize
Bayan News – The Netherlands-based Children’s Rights Institute has awarded the International Children’s Peace Prize to Nila Ebrahimi, a 17-year-old girl from Afghanistan.
This award was presented to the Afghan girl on Tuesday, November 19, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the “Children’s Rights” organization, in a ceremony held in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
During the award ceremony, officials from the Children’s Rights Institute stated that Nila won the award after a tough competition with 165 candidates from 47 countries worldwide.
Upon receiving the award, Nila Ebrahimi said:”Winning the International Children’s Peace Prize means that the voices of Afghan women and girls will echo across the globe. In the darkest times, we must all give them strength and hope.”
On the other hand, Marc Dullaert, founder and president of the Children’s Rights Foundation, added during the ceremony:
“Women and girls across Afghanistan are currently facing unbearable oppression. The ban on education beyond elementary school has deprived an astounding 2.5 million girls in Afghanistan of schooling. Nila’s inspiring work in amplifying voices that resonate worldwide makes her a truly deserving winner of this year’s 20th International Peace Prize.”
The Children’s Rights Institute, in a statement, highlighted that Nila was recognized for her leadership in a musical protest movement within the country, as well as for inspiring other Afghan girls to demand their rights and fight against injustice through public speaking and international activism.
