Bayan News – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan has announced that $2.42 billion will be required in the coming year to provide assistance to those in need.
On Thursday, December 19, OCHA released its humanitarian aid plan for Afghanistan, stating that the budget for 2025 will provide emergency assistance to approximately 16.8 million people across the country.
According to OCHA, assessments for 2025 indicate that 22.9 million people will need humanitarian assistance. However, aid organizations will only be able to support 16.8 million individuals.
The organization also highlighted that Taliban-imposed restrictions pose significant threats to various segments of society, including women and religious minorities.
OCHA’s report notes that poverty levels remain alarmingly high, with 14.8 million people projected to face acute hunger by March 2025.
Additionally, OCHA reported that between July and December of this year, 1.2 million undocumented migrants returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan.
This comes as UN agencies in 2024 managed to assist just over 15 million people out of the 23 million in need of aid.
