Protesting girls criticize UNAMA for not effectively supporting women and girls

Following the suspension of the duties of men and women in the offices of the United Nations in Afghanistan (UNAMA), a number of protesting girls are asking this organization to seek general changes for women and girls in Afghanistan for the general return of women to work.

In an interview with Bayan News, Yaqut Mandegar, one of the protesting girls of Kabul, says that if UNAMA only seeks to support the women who work in this institution, it will show that this organization does not support the women and girls of Afghanistan.

Stating that UNAMA’s work in the past two years has not been effective in supporting Afghan women, he emphasized that the United Nations institutions should support all Afghan women and girls. “If change comes, it should come for all women.”

This protesting lady also said to UNAMA that this United Nations body supported the caretaker government in Kabul in the last two years, while she witnessed Afghan women and girls being excluded from various structures of society and did not do anything effective.

This protest takes place while UNAMA has suspended all male and female employees for an indefinite period in connection with the ban on women working in United Nations offices.

UNAMA announced yesterday (16 Hamal) in a statement that the authorities of the caretaker government of Kabul informed this organization that no Afghan women are allowed to work for the United Nations in Afghanistan and this can be implemented immediately.

According to UNAMA, this decision extends the directive previously issued on December 24, 2022 prohibiting Afghan women from working in domestic and international non-governmental organizations.
