Unprecedented increase in child casualties in Afghanistan; 16 children died in two days

A number of international organizations, including the United Nations Children’s Fund and the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, have expressed concern about the increase in child casualties in recent violence in Afghanistan.
In the latest case, UNICEF reports that 16 children have died in the events of Balkh and Kabul in the last two days.
These concerns come after the recent terrorist attacks in Kabul, Balkh provinces, in addition to civilians, a number of children were also killed.
Mohammad Agu Iwiya, UNICEF Afghanistan’s director, tweeted that the violence would end as soon as possible, given the deaths of children in Kabul and Balkh.
“In the last two days, 16 children were killed in a mine explosion in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif and another in Uruzgan,” he added.
The UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan also stated that children should never bear the cost of adult conflict and, in addition, that all institutions should work to ensure that Afghan children are continuously protected.
On the other hand, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Twitter, added that a large number of civilians, especially 16 children, had been killed in the recent attacks in Balkh and Kabul.
Bennett has called on the authorities to conduct a full and independent investigation into the incidents and how to prevent child casualties.
Two children die in Kunduz province
Concerns have been raised that reports from Kunduz province that two children have been killed in a mortar shell explosion.
Local Taliban officials in Kunduz province have confirmed to local reporters that two children were killed and two others were injured when a mortar shell exploded in the provincial capital.
This event took place in Bagh-e Mir, Kunduz city.
