Muttaqi Meets with US Officials in Doha

Bayan News – Officials from the Kabul caretaker government announce that a delegation led by Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Acting Foreign Minister, has met with US officials in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, tweeted on Friday (July 27) that the meeting will take place in Doha at the end of the current month.

According to the ministry’s spokesman, lifting sanctions, removing Taliban officials from the blacklist, releasing Afghanistan’s financial reserves, and violating airspace will be on the agenda of this meeting.

Balkhi also reminded that Mr. Muttaqi will also meet with Qatari officials regarding bilateral relations.

This meeting comes as some members of the US House of Representatives recently asked the Biden administration to refrain from meeting with Kabul caretaker government officials.

Michael McCaul, the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, had said that meeting with current Taliban officials gave them legitimacy.

However, US officials are meeting with the Taliban delegation while Washington has always stated that the Taliban will not be internationally recognized until they change their behavior.

The Kabul caretaker government has implemented strict policies towards women and girls in Afghanistan over the past two years, and these policies have been met with international reactions.

Banning girls’ education, blocking universities to female students, preventing women from working in domestic and international non-governmental organizations, and recently banning women’s cosmetic activities are among the strict policies that the Taliban have implemented against women and girls.
