Petraeus: The US weapons left in Afghanistan are worrying
Bayannews – 15 May 1401
David Petraeus, the former commander of the US military in Afghanistan, has expressed concern that the military equipment and weapons of US troops stationed in Afghanistan are not good for the world.
“There are a number of new weapons and ammunition systems and other equipment that can be used,” he told VOA. But I strongly doubt that the planes are in good condition. I doubt that military vehicles are in good condition. “Because they do not have the extra skills and it is not even technically easy for them (the Taliban) to fly planes, drive cars or activate everything.”
Mr Petraeus expressed concern about the presence of terrorist groups and a new wave of violence in the Khorasan branch of ISIL, saying it had been predicted that the Taliban would not be able to secure Afghanistan. He blames the release on thousands of Afghan prisoners who have re-emerged and are launching attacks.
“Remember, we already feared that when the Taliban came to power, they would not be able to secure all of Afghanistan,” the retired US general said. “Recent violence and the cohesion of various groups have created security problems for the Taliban.”
Referring to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, the retired US official said that the Russian war in Ukraine had affected the deplorable humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
“I do not think the issue of Afghanistan has been forgotten in Washington,” he said. “But the issue of Ukraine has affected the situation in Afghanistan, and it is other issues in the world that are really important.”
