Nuclear tensions: Moscow presides over UN Security Council periodically

Bayan News

At the same time as nuclear tensions and Moscow’s arms deployment in Belarus, Russia recently assumed the periodic presidency of the UNITED Nations Security Council.

The United Nations official Twitter page confirmed the news on Saturday (April 1).

This is the first time Moscow has assumed the periodic presidency of the UN Security Council since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has called for an immediate reduction in nuclear tensions between Russia and the West.

“The risk of nuclear weapons is now greater than at any time since the Cold War,” Izumi Nakamitsev, the UNITED Nations’ senior representative for disarmament, told the UN Security Council yesterday. The war in Ukraine is the most severe example of this danger,” he said.

In his words, the lack of talks between countries with nuclear weapons has increased the risk.

Meanwhile, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN has also stated that its country’s nuclear weapons deployment in Belarus will not violate international obligations.
