EU imposes sanctions on three senior officials of the Kabul government as restrictions against women increase

Bayan News – As restrictions against women and girls in Afghanistan increase, the European Union has imposed sanctions on the acting head of the Supreme Court, the acting head of the Ministry of Justice, and the acting head of the Ministry of Education in a new move.

In a statement, the EU added that in addition to sanctioning three senior officials of the Kabul government, 18 individuals and five government entities have been sanctioned for violating human rights laws and committing violence against women.

Officials of the Kabul government have not commented on this matter yet.

The European Union had previously sanctioned several officials of the Kabul government, including the acting head of the Ministry of Higher Education.

The EU is imposing sanctions on senior officials of the current Kabul government just as government security forces violently suppressed a women’s protest by make-up artists in Kabul.

International organizations have expressed concern over the violent behavior of government forces and stated that current Kabul officials must respect the demands and protests of women.
