UN General Assembly Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza
Bayan News – The United Nations General Assembly, in a session on Friday (October 27), called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and a halt to the hostilities between Israel and Hamas by adopting a resolution.
The General Assembly resolution was approved with 120 votes in favor, 14 votes against, and 45 abstentions. According to this resolution, the United Nations has demanded a sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and a cessation of attacks by both sides.
This resolution was proposed by Jordan and put to a vote in the open session of the General Assembly. Mahmoud Hammad, the Jordanian Ambassador to the United Nations, on behalf of the group of 22 Arab countries that had prepared the draft resolution, had called for an urgent vote on it due to the urgency of the situation.
After the failure of the Security Council, which had previously been unsuccessful in adopting proposed resolutions due to repeated opposition from veto-wielding members such as Brazil, the United States, and Russia, this Arab group sought swift action from the General Assembly by presenting a draft resolution.
