More than One Million People Have Applied for Asylum in European Countries in 2023

Bayan News – The European Union’s asylum agency has announced that in the year 2023, over one million people from various parts of the world have applied for asylum in European countries.

Nina Gregori, the director of this agency, told European media that authorities have registered 123,000 asylum applications in October of this year alone, which is the highest number in the past seven years.

She attributed the high volume of asylum applications to increasing tensions and stated, “The world around us is becoming more unstable day by day. Therefore, the need for protection and asylum seekers will not decrease in 2024 and beyond, but in some cases, it will also increase.”

The director of the European Union’s asylum agency still considers 2024 as a challenging year.

However, in the past two years, after Ukrainian refugees, the people of Afghanistan have been the largest group of asylum seekers in European and Western countries.

With the emergence of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, thousands of people have attempted to reach the West and Europe through legal means.

On the other hand, the European Union’s asylum agency also added that until late October, they have registered over 900,000 asylum applications in total, indicating a 22% increase compared to the same period last year.
