Tension between UNAMA and the Taliban; Otunbayeva: The current system in Afghanistan should not be recognized

Bayan News – Roza Otunbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has recently called on the international community not to recognize the Taliban until issues related to women’s rights, girls’ education, and the constitution are addressed.

UNAMA has recently presented a report on the developments in Afghanistan over the past three months under Taliban rule to the United Nations Security Council.

In the report, the head of UNAMA stated: “In UNAMA’s consultations with the people of Afghanistan, there is widespread agreement that the Taliban should not be recognized until issues regarding women’s rights, girls’ education, and the constitution are addressed.”

The UNAMA report discusses the situation in Afghanistan over the past three months and potential options and actions for the United Nations.

Additionally, Lisa Doughten, the director of the financial and partnership section of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stated to the Security Council on June 21 that currently, 23.7 million people in Afghanistan need urgent humanitarian assistance.

This UN official emphasized that the adverse effects of climate change have intensified the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

According to the report, Rosemary DiCarlo, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, after the Doha meeting, said that although the Taliban did not negotiate directly with members of Afghan civil society at this meeting, they were clearly reminded of the need for women’s participation in various areas of public life.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council meeting on Afghanistan is scheduled to take place this month, although the exact date has not yet been specified.

The Security Council meeting occurs amid heightened tensions between UNAMA and the Taliban government following the promulgation of the law on “Amr bil Ma’ruf.”

Recently, the Taliban’s Minister of Amr bil Ma’ruf announced that he would no longer be willing to cooperate with the UN representation in Afghanistan.
