SIGAR: U.S. Provided $885 Million in Aid to Afghanistan in 2024

Bayan News – The U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reported in its latest update that the United States provided $885 million in aid to Afghanistan in 2024.

The report, released on Friday, November 8, states that Washington remains the largest donor to Afghanistan under Taliban rule, with U.S. financial assistance totaling $3.33 billion over the past three years.

According to the SIGAR report, the U.S. has offered or pledged over $885 million this year alone to support humanitarian aid efforts in Afghanistan, with $534 million of that amount distributed to various United Nations offices in the fourth quarter of the 2024 fiscal year.

The report indicates that since the U.S. withdrawal on August 15, 2021, a total of $21.06 billion has been directed to Afghanistan and Afghan refugees.

This includes nearly $3.33 billion dedicated by the U.S. primarily for humanitarian and developmental aid.

Additionally, the report highlights that another $3.50 billion, representing half of Afghanistan’s central bank reserves, was frozen in a U.S. bank following the Taliban’s return to power and later transferred to a special fund in Switzerland.

According to SIGAR, these funds have not yet been used for the benefit of the Afghan people but are intended to protect broader financial stability. In the long term, this may include increasing Afghanistan’s central bank capital if certain conditions are met.

Previously, the U.S. Special Inspector General expressed concern in a report that U.S. development aid has not benefited the Afghan people as intended and has instead largely benefited the Taliban. However, interim Afghan government officials have consistently denied these reports.
