World Food Programme: 14 Million Afghans Will Need Urgent Assistance This Winter

Bayan News – The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that 14.8 million people in Afghanistan will need urgent assistance this coming winter.

In a statement released on Monday, November 11, the WFP indicated that food insecurity in Afghanistan has slightly decreased compared to the previous year.

According to this UN-affiliated organization, as winter approaches, the WFP has secured 85% of the necessary food resources for those in need in Afghanistan.

The WFP’s statement noted that winter assistance for vulnerable individuals in Afghanistan will increase this year. This international body is scaling up its winter support to improve food security for 6.2 million vulnerable people in the country.

The WFP also reported that, as part of the urgent aid program, an additional 2.6 million people will receive assistance. However, it also stated that a budget of $787 million is required to support those in need in Afghanistan.

The statement added that, in order to reach people during the winter season, the WFP has so far delivered 52,610 tons of food to 1.5 million people in provinces experiencing heavy snowfall.

The provinces of Badakhshan, Bamiyan, Ghor, and Daikundi are prioritized by the WFP for food deliveries.
