UNAMA Urges Taliban to Halt Execution Orders
Bayan News – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has called on the Taliban government to halt the implementation of the death penalty following the sentencing of a man to death in Paktia province.
On Wednesday, November 13, UNAMA issued a statement on platform X, stating that public executions violate Afghanistan’s international human rights commitments. UNAMA stressed in its statement the importance of respecting fair trial procedures and ensuring access to legal representation.
This appeal comes as the Taliban Supreme Court announced the execution of a man in the sports stadium of Gardez, the capital of Paktia province, on Wednesday. The sentence for the murder convict was carried out in public, attended by hundreds of spectators and high-ranking Taliban officials, including Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s Minister of the Interior.
This marks the sixth public execution carried out by the Taliban since they regained control of Afghanistan.
