The UN Once Again Refuses to Hand Over Afghanistan’s Seat to the Taliban’s Interim Government
Bayan News – Afghan media, citing diplomatic sources, have reported that the United Nations, for the fourth consecutive year, has refused to hand over Afghanistan’s seat to the Taliban’s interim government.
According to published reports, the decision regarding Afghanistan’s seat at the UN was discussed last Wednesday in a session attended by representatives from the United States, China, and Russia.
During this session, the credentials of the representatives of Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Libya were reviewed. As a result of this review, the examination of Afghanistan’s representative’s credentials was postponed, and a decision regarding the seat was deferred to the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
Nonetheless, this marks the fourth consecutive year that the United Nations has rejected the request of the Taliban’s interim government and has refused to hand over Afghanistan’s seat.
Currently, Afghanistan’s seat at the UN is held by Nasir Ahmad Faiq, a representative of Afghanistan’s former government.
The interim government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has nominated Suhail Shaheen as its representative to the United Nations, but the UN does not recognize Shaheen as Afghanistan’s representative.
