UNAMA announces the creation of a drug control working group in Afghanistan

Bayan News – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced that it established a working group for drug control on Thursday, November 28.

According to a statement from UNAMA, “Following the third meeting of special representatives held in Doha, Qatar, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) today held the inaugural session of the Drug Control Working Group.”

UNAMA explained that the creation of this working group stems from recommendations made by an independent assessment provided to the United Nations Security Council. The goal is to ensure a more coordinated, structured, and consistent approach in engaging with the ruling authorities for the benefit of the Afghan people.

Rozza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Afghanistan, said during a virtual session, “The fight against drugs is a very important issue for Afghanistan, affecting both rural communities and peace and stability in the region.”

This announcement comes amid a report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which revealed that opium production in Afghanistan has increased by 30% this year.
