The United Nations official: Appointing a special representative for Afghanistan is not currently on the agenda
Bayan News – Rosemary DiCarlo, United Nations Under-Secretary-General, says that at the moment, the issue of appointing a special representative of the United Nations for Afghanistan is not on the agenda.
She told reporters on Wednesday (June 26) that efforts are underway to have the UN Secretary-General appoint someone to this position.
According to DiCarlo, there are differences in the UN Security Council on how to appoint a special representative in Afghanistan, and the support of 15 members of the Security Council is needed to make this happen.
This UN official also noted that the issue of appointing a special representative for Afghanistan is not closed, and the United Nations wants steps to be taken in this direction.
Ms. DiCarlo added: “We have never appointed anyone for a country that does not want it.”
This is while the UN Security Council, in the course of the “independent assessment and recommendations” of Fereydoon Sinirlioğlu, the UN’s special coordinator for Afghanistan, issued a resolution last year calling for the appointment of a UN special representative for Afghanistan.
The appointment of a UN special representative has been one of the most controversial issues between the United Nations, the countries in the region and the Taliban, and after months, they have not yet reached a conclusion.
