OCHA: More than $600 million in urgent funding needed for the winter season

Bayan News – The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) states that $603.5 million in urgent funding is needed for assistance during this winter season.

This agency wrote on Wednesday (September 11) on platform X that this year, initial aid must be provided to vulnerable areas in Afghanistan.

According to OCHA, this funding is necessary for the priorities set between October and December 2024.

OCHA also added that $104 million is needed for “pre-positioning requirements” in the first three months of 2025.

The agency noted that in its inter-sectoral prioritization, it has identified 171 districts of high priority, 227 districts of medium priority, and three districts of low priority.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs mentioned that this prioritization was carried out based on experience and situation analysis, using prioritization experiences from previous years.

OCHA stated that the risks of winter are high and the level of vulnerability is severe, and adequate services are not being provided to the people.

This agency also noted that it faces a $2.3 billion funding gap in the humanitarian budget for Afghanistan in 2024.

OCHA had requested $3.06 billion for humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan this year but says it has only received 25% of this budget so far.

The agency announced that this year, 23.7 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance, but they have prioritized 17 million of them.
