UN Secretary-General’s Report: Over Two Thousand Security Events Recorded in Afghanistan in Three Months
Bayan News – A recent report from the UN Secretary-General indicates that 2,127 security events have been recorded in Afghanistan over the past three months, representing a 53 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
The report by António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, was published on Tuesday (September 17) under the title “Situation in Afghanistan and Its Implications for International Peace and Security.”
This report comes just one day before the meeting of the UN Security Council.
The report clearly states that during this period, 80 cases of armed conflict were recorded in Afghanistan, while there were only 37 cases in the same period last year.
According to the report, the number of explosions caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) increased from six to 13 compared to last year.
According to the UN Secretary-General’s report, anti-Taliban fronts, despite not capturing any territory, have conducted 73 attacks against the Taliban, carried out by the Freedom Front and the National Resistance Front.
Violations of Rights of Former Afghan Government Military Personnel
The UN Secretary-General also criticized the violations of rights against military personnel of the former Afghan government in this report. Guterres stated that despite the Taliban’s general amnesty, reports of human rights violations against former military officials in Afghanistan have been received.
The UN documented four cases of extrajudicial killings, nine cases of arbitrary detention, and six cases of torture and mistreatment of former government officials and members of Afghanistan’s national defense and security forces.
Guterres’ report also addresses the attacks by ISIS in Afghanistan, noting that four attacks have been recorded in Bamiyan, Kandahar, and Kabul in the last three months, along with operations conducted by Taliban forces against ISIS.
According to the report, ISIS has continued its propaganda against the Taliban and the international community in the past three months, and in May, ISIS released a video mocking the Taliban’s claims of security.
The report states: “On May 26, ISIS released a video threatening all foreigners and the United Nations in Afghanistan, ridiculing the Taliban’s claim of successful security in the country.”
The threats from ISIS are mentioned in the UN Secretary-General’s report, coming just days after the group carried out a deadly attack against Shia civilians in Daykundi province.
Four members of ISIS executed 14 Shia individuals in the Daykundi-Ghor border area and published images of the attack.
The UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan will be held tomorrow, Wednesday
