International Day of Peace; Guterres: “Wherever we look, peace is under attack”
Bayan News – António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated on Saturday, September 21, in a message marking the International Day of Peace, that “wherever we look, peace is under attack in every corner of the world.”
September 21 marks the International Day of Peace, first celebrated in 1982 by the United Nations. Since then, efforts have been made to stop war and violence worldwide.
Referring to conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and other places, the UN Secretary-General added, “Wherever we look, peace is under attack.”
In his message, Guterres said, “This cycle of human suffering must end immediately.”
He further expressed, “From Gaza to Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond, we see civilians caught in the crossfire of wars. Homes have been destroyed, populations have been traumatized, and sometimes entire communities have lost everything.”
According to Guterres, the world today needs peace, and as the International Day of Peace reminds us, the solution is in our hands.
The UN Secretary-General emphasized, “Fostering a culture of peace means replacing division, helplessness, and despair with justice, equality, and hope for all. It means focusing on preventing war, advancing sustainable development goals, promoting human rights, and combating all forms of discrimination and hatred.”
The United Nations is set to hold an international summit with its members later this month to discuss global peace and security.
