Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan; EU Announces €146 Million Aid

Bayan News – The European Union Commissioner for International Partnerships has announced that the EU will provide €146 million for the people of Afghanistan.

Jutta Urpilainen, the commissioner, stated on Wednesday (September 25) in a statement that this aid package will address the increasing needs of the Afghan people, particularly at a time when the rights of women and girls have been alarmingly weakened.

This EU official emphasized in her statement that the union will continue to support its aid efforts for the people of Afghanistan.

She noted that the new €146 million package reinforces the EU’s ongoing commitment to support the most vulnerable individuals in Afghanistan.

Jutta Urpilainen indicated that the EU’s attention to basic needs and livelihood assistance will continue through a principled approach, with special attention to women and girls.

She added that since 2021, the European Union has provided a total of €903 million for basic needs, livelihoods, forced displacement, and migration.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) had requested a budget of $3.06 billion to assist the people of Afghanistan this year, but it reports that it has only received 25 percent of this budget so far.

This office states that there is an urgent need for a budget of $603.5 million to address vulnerable areas in Afghanistan during the winter season.
