OCHA: $6.7 Billion in Aid Provided to Afghanistan Since Taliban Takeover

Bayan News – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) states that since the Taliban assumed power in Afghanistan, $6.7 billion in financial aid has been provided to the country.

This UN-affiliated organization posted on the platform X on Sunday (November 3) that, out of this amount, approximately $3.3 billion was provided from August 15, 2021, to the end of 2022.

In its statement, OCHA noted that the people of Afghanistan still face challenges such as conflict, food insecurity, natural disasters, and climate change.

According to OCHA, alongside these challenges, the Taliban’s restrictions on Afghan women and girls have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the country.

OCHA also stated that over the past three years, it has helped prevent hunger in Afghanistan. Additionally, during this period, the spread of waterborne diseases has decreased, and healthcare services have expanded.

The statement further mentioned that, in the past three years, the Taliban have issued 71 decrees limiting the presence of women in humanitarian organizations.

OCHA added: “Despite the existing challenges, humanitarian workers have tirelessly worked to support Afghan women’s participation in all aspects of humanitarian efforts.”

According to the statement, these efforts include negotiations for women’s presence in aid organizations, creating separate administrative spaces, and covering expenses for their male guardians.

The international organization warns that if funding levels decline, the humanitarian achievements in Afghanistan over the past years under Taliban rule will be lost.
