Rubab Recognized as Cultural Heritage of Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan

Bayan News – UNESCO, the United Nations’ scientific, cultural, and educational organization, has announced the inclusion of the rubab as shared intangible cultural heritage of Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

On Wednesday, December 6, UNESCO stated that the decision was made during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Paraguay.

According to UNESCO, the rubab is one of the oldest musical instruments in Central, South, and Southwest Asia, played during various ceremonies, including festivals and wedding celebrations.

UNESCO also highlighted that the rubab is “a leading instrument in orchestral and contemporary music performances, including in multinational ensembles. It contributes to cultural and social cohesion and plays a significant role in fostering cultural exchange and solidarity, especially among migrant communities.”

The recognition of the rubab as intangible cultural heritage of Afghanistan comes as the interim government has banned playing and listening to music. Over the past three years, the morality enforcement officials of the government have destroyed thousands of musical instruments across Afghanistan.
